Which scales do you 
need to know for the differentjgrades?
 


For the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM),

the list of scales and arpeggios required for each grade are as follows:


    u Scales must be played from memory, tongued or slurred, in the

       following keys. Up to grade 5, minor scales may be played in their

       harmonic or melodic forms, at the candidate’s choice.

Grade 1: G major, F major, D minor (one octave)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the range indicated


Grade 2: G major, F major, D minor, A minor (one octave);

               D major (two octaves)

Grade 3: Bb major, E minor, G minor, A minor (one octave)

               F major, G major, D minor (a twelfth)

               C major (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scale starting on G (one octave)


Grade 4: A major (one octave)

               F major, F# minor, G minor (a twelfth)

               C major, D major, Eb major (two octaves)

               B minor, C minor, D minor (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scale starting on C and D (two octaves)

               Dominant 7th in the key of G (two octaves)


Grade 5: G major, Ab major, A major (a twelfth)

               F minor, F# minor, A minor (a twelfth)

               Bb major, D major, Eb major, E major (two octaves)

               B minor, C# minor, E minor (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scale starting on D and Eb (two octaves)

               Dominant 7th in keys of Eb, F and G (two octaves)

               Diminished 7th starting on D (two octaves)


FROM GRADE 6 ONWARDS MINOR SCALES MUST BE KNOWN IN BOTH HARMONIC AND MELODIC FORMS


Grade 6: F# major, Ab major, G minor, G# minor (a twelfth)

               Bb major, B major, Db major, E major, F major (two octaves)

               Bb minor, B minor, C# minor, F minor (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scales on Bb, C, Eb and E (two octaves)

               Dominant 7ths in keys of E, F and A (two octaves)

               Diminished 7ths starting on Bb and B (two octaves)


Grade 7: F# major, G major, Ab major, A major (a twelfth)

               F# minor, G minor, G# minor, A minor (a twelfth)

               ALL OTHER KEYS, major and minor (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scales: starting on any note F#-A (a twelfth)

               and any other note (two octaves)

               Dominant 7ths in the keys of Eb, E, F# and Ab (two octaves)

               Diminished 7th starting on Bb, B and C (two octaves)


Grade 8: F# major, G major, Ab major, A major (a twelfth)

               F# minor, G minor, G# minor, A minor (a twelfth)

               ALL OTHER KEYS, major and minor (two octaves)

               Scales in thirds: C major and D major (two octaves)

               Arpeggios for the above keys in the ranges indicated

               Chromatic scales: starting on Bb (two and a half octaves);

               any note F#-A (a twelfth and any other note (two octaves)

               Whole tone scales starting on C and C#

               Dominant 7ths in the keys of B, C, Db and D (one octave)

               and all other keys (two octaves)

               Diminished 7ths starting on any note Bb - F (two octaves)
